Simple and Affordable Ways to Switch to Non-Toxic Beauty and Skincare
One of the most common concerns I hear about switching to low-tox, non-toxic personal care products is the cost. I get it—many of these products seem expensive upfront. But with a little planning, you can reduce the cost of these swaps and save money in the long run.
Why Choose Low-Tox Products?
Our environment is full of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which interfere with hormones and can negatively impact health. Found in plastics, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and even water, EDCs have been linked to:
Infertility
Hormone-related cancers (e.g., thyroid and breast cancer)
Earlier puberty and lower sperm counts
Metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity
Some EDCs commonly found in personal care products include:
Phthalates: Found in plastics, hair sprays, and perfumes; linked to lower fertility success.
Parabens: Common in lotions and skincare; associated with elevated estrogen levels.
How to Start Making the Switch
The easiest way to transition is to replace products gradually. When you run out of something that isn’t low-tox, swap it for a cleaner alternative. To avoid falling back on old habits, research options ahead of time so you know exactly what to buy when the time comes.
I personally use the EWG’s skin deep database to help choose products. They’re an independent organization that researches ingredients and rates products based on their safety. I recommend clients choose products rated a 3 or lower.
For shopping, I love Credo Beauty—it’s like Sephora for clean beauty. They even have a rewards program that makes it easy to snag free samples as you earn points. But sometimes buying directly from the product’s website or amazon can be cheaper depending on promo codes and subscription options.
How I Keep My Routine Simple and Affordable
I used to spend a lot of money on Credo buying all sorts of serums, creams, etc. But then I started a business, became a mom, bought a house, and things got expensive. I wanted to find ways to save money and this was one of the first places I realized I can do that.
Moisturizer: I use Kushi beef tallow (yes, really!) as my go-to cream. It’s affordable, long-lasting, and works for my husband too. Plus it has lavender in it, which is so relaxing at night. For variety and additional benefits, I sometimes use cold-pressed castor oil, which doubles as a hand lotion.
Serum: I still occasionally splurge on a serum because I just absolutely love Pai’s rosehip serum. The one good thing is that it lasts me about 3 months.
Deodorant: After trying many options, my favorite is the super affordable Thai crystal stick. Plus it lasts forever. I am still using the 2 pack that I bought in October 2023!! I apply it right after I shower and it lasts until I shower again.
Cleanser: I love Phaze cleanser by Pai, which lasts 3 months even with daily use.
Body Soap: Costco’s bulk Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Bar Soap is a budget-friendly favorite. Another budget friendly option that I like because I also use it for my daughter is EO body soap.
Body Lotion: Budget friendly, low-tox and lasts forever, EO body lotion.
Toothpaste: I use Boka’s mint toothpaste with nano-hydroxyapatite (no fluoride) for enamel health. It’s pricey, but I save with Amazon subscriptions. A slightly more affordable option is Dr. Bronners toothpaste.
Shampoo & Conditioner: Plaine Products are my go-to for fine hair. It seems a bit pricey but their large bottles last a long time and I just love how my hair feels. For a weekly scalp detox and clarifying shampoo, I use K18 peptide prep.
Makeup: I don’t wear much, mostly out of laziness, but because of that my makeup lasts me forever. I keep it simple, I like Well People’s concealer, ILIA’s mascara, Honest’s tinted lip balm, and Suntegrity’s tinted sunscreen.
Final Thoughts
Transitioning to low-tox personal care doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. The key is to nourish your body from the inside out and keep your routine as simple as possible. Start small, prioritize quality, and look for long-lasting products that work for your budget.
